- Electives: Money Smarts (real-world budgeting and debit card reconciliation), Business Builders (entrepreneurship from 2nd grade up), and, for high schoolers, college and career pathways such as CNA, OSHA 10, HVAC, auto mechanics and beauty business.
- Clubs and events: a year-long Spelling Bee, debate, reading clubs, STEM challenges, family treasure hunts, and the annual Akin Reunion.
- Summer: self-paced learning games, eLibrary reading challenges, and one-week live summer camps.
How every day begins
Every K–5 class opens with Akin's morning chant, Roots and Branches:
My roots run deep, my branches reach high, I'm bright and I'm bold, and I'll always try. I lift up my friends, they lift up me, I love my family and my community. I love who I am, I know I can grow, I'm Akin and ready, so here I go!
The youngest children start with the short version: "My roots run deep, my branches grow, I'm bright and I'm bold, and I'm ready to go!" Students also turn it into the Akin song in music class.
Safety commitments
- Every teacher passes a background check and signs Akin's child safety code.
- Children's accounts open only after a parent gives consent, as federal children's privacy law (COPPA) requires.
- Screenshots and screen recordings are blocked or detected in the app, to protect every child's face and name.
- Parents see all of their child's messages, grades and class recordings; teachers never message a child privately.
- Student data is never sold or used for ads, and every record has a published deletion date.
- Celebrations praise effort and growth, and every quote and lesson is checked for accuracy.
Founder story
Built by a mom who homeschools, for every family who wants more.
Anika R. Woods is a wife, a mother, a court professional and an entrepreneur. Since her family moved from Texas to California for her husband's new job, she has homeschooled her daughter with a curriculum she curated herself, one that honors their heritage and history. Akin grew from that experience: a way to give every family the same kind of learning.
Anika brings more than 20 years in court operations, compliance, records and training design, the skills behind Akin's state-ready attendance and records. Her path to building a business began in 2013 at an Operation HOPE course at the Martin Luther King Jr. Center in Atlanta, and that lesson in financial dignity now lives in Akin's Money Smarts and Business Builders classes.
Partner with Akin
Akin partners with organizations that share its mission, offering families resources, books, programs and opportunities through the app. Partners are featured on the Akin website with their permission.
Scholarships. The Akin Scholarship Fund offers need-based scholarships to any family who qualifies, funded by tax-deductible gifts through a fiscal sponsor from spring 2027 and by Akin Learning Foundation, a separate nonprofit, from 2028–29.
